We leave Marrakech in the morning, climbing into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at 2,260 meters above sea level, with Berber villages and terraced valleys visible along the switchback road. Descending the far side, we follow the Ounila Valley to Ait Benhaddou, where you'll cross the river — by footbridge or, when the water is higher, on foot with the help of local guides — to reach the ksar itself. A guided walk through the kasbah takes in its towered mudbrick architecture and the film history tied to the site, with time to climb to the top for a panoramic view over the valley. After lunch in nearby Ouarzazate or at the kasbah, we make the return drive to Marrakech over the pass.
